Charles L. A. Biernatazki: Born 1819 in “Ostrovo” (but it seems there are several towns with this as part of their name, and I don’t know which one). Parents identified as Charles Biernatzki and Paulina Shanapski; no other information on the parents.
Attended military academy in St Petersburg then served in the Russian army then the engineering service. In 1847 he became involved with a rebellion to overthrow the government. He was captured but escaped, obtained a false passport and traveled to the US.
Married and settled in Iowa. Died 1896. Had 5 children.
