I’m hoping to find information about my great-grandmother, Helena (Helene / Helen) Bozek, born on 20 June 1908 (sometimes listed as 20 June 1912) Her birthplace is listed on various documents from the International Refugee Organization as Lecka, Poland but also sometimes as Blazowa, Poland and once or twice as Krakow, Poland. She was Roman Catholic, so I’m sure her birth was registered in a local parish, however, I unfortunately don’t speak Polish in order to submit a request.
A notice I have from her funeral in 1997 lists Walter Bozek and Katherine Kazik as her father and mother respectively, but I’m not sure how accurate that is, and I’m unsure what the Polish versions of those anglicized names would be. My mom can’t recall her speaking about her childhood except that she grew up in rural Poland and never learned to read or write.
One of the intake forms for the Gneisenau-Kaserne for Displaced Persons in Koblenz, Germany indicates she lived in Poland until 1944, at which point she was “deported by the Gestapo.” She rarely shared stories with my mom about the war, but in a few emotional moments, did mention she lost family and was in a forced labour camp (which one, I’m not sure, but my grandmother was born in February 1945 in Bruckrachdorf Germany, so it would make sense it was somewhere near there?). From 1946 – 1955, she lived in various Displaced Persons camps in Germany before emigrating to Toronto, Canada in March 1955.
If you could please direct me to any resources that might shed light on her time before 1944 when she was still in Poland, or any information about her family in Lecka, I’d really appreciate it!
Thank you so much,
