I would like to visit the birthplace of my Grandparents, to feel a connection or just to see where they grew up. I would like to find out what conditions in Poland were at the time they left. I’m not sure if they travelled with someone or alone, but I feel a deep emotion when I think of them leaving their homes and family to move so far away.
I knew my my Grandfather’s name as Walter Pukoszek, and I know his Father’s name was Anthony. His birthdate is reported as December 31, 1881 and I know he immigrated to the USA (Chicago, Illinois) sometime before 1906. He moved to Gary, Indiana sometime after June 1913 and married my Grandmother June 20, 1914. They lived in Gary until their deaths, 1963 and 1968.
From Census, Social Security and death certificates, my Grandfather’s name was also recorded as Valenty, Walenty and Pukosi, Pokosi, Pukohzek, Pokoszek and my Grandmother was Sophie Zofia, Zofie, or Sofia Idziak or Idzik. She was born June 18, 1890. I haven’t been able to find any immigration records or Polish records on either of them. My Mother, her sister and brother did not know any information about my Grandparents either. I’m 50% Polish and would appreciate any information I can obtain and would like to travel to Poland to visit their birthplace if I’m able to find out where that is. The history of the time they were in Poland (late 1800s-early 1900’s) would be interesting to me or resources. I would also like to visit Poland and am particularly interested in any spiritual places, and information on where to visit that is not tourist focused, although Jasna Gora would be a must to see Our Lady of Czestochowa.
