Ernest is not my ancestor, but I am researching his arrival in North America in an attempt to provide context for the preservation of his local historic landmark home in Grand Island, Lake County, Florida, USA. I have found a border crossing card where he arrived in the USA from Canada at Niagara Falls in 1913, and on it, it says he first arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1897 aboard the SS Vancouver. On that card it says that his birthplace is “Bolsigweck, Germany.” I couldn’t find any record of such a place, so I spoke to a friend that lives in Berlin, and he suggested that it might be Borsigwerk/Biskupitz/Biskupice in what is now Poland but was Germany in 1897. I also have a copy of the 1900 US Census that lists an Ernest Wandrei of the same approximate age living in Kankakee Township, Illinois, USA. I’m wondering if this might be the same person, and so it could be an earlier spelling or perhaps an error by the census taker.
