I am trying to find information about my Polish ancestors, including my grandfather, Josef Weintraub, born in 1900. Everything I know is from my father’s memory of what his father told him decades ago, so spellings and some details may be off. Josef was the fourth son of Herz Weintraub, following Edward, Morris and Gerhard. Josef’s mother, Rachel Ribner, died while giving birth to his younger sister Freida. His father remarried – family lore has it that the second wife was Rachel’s younger sister- and gave those children the last name of Weinman to set them apart from his first five children. Their names were Lilliana and Leo Weinman. I don’t know their mother’s name.
On a record of his arrival at Ellis Island, my grandfather reported that he was from Ralush, Poland, but I can find no evidence of a town by that name. My father said his father once told him he was from Galicia. The family owned a farm, and raised horses. The older brothers all left for America before World War I, with my grandfather, who served in the war, following in 1921. Freida, who married Jacob Heuberg of Krakow, arrived in the US after World War II. Lilliana also came to America after the war; her brother likely came before.
Grand father’s name was miss-spelled upon arrival. May have been Jakobsche or similar....
