I’ve been trying to find the origins of my Jewish grandfather for several years. He emigrated to London from (town of residence) Tarnow on 26 August 1905, sailing on the Nerissa from Hamburg. He called himself “Adolf Kippel”, a barber. Also travelling was his sister (we assume) “Ernestine Kippel”. When in London they called themselves “Joseph Kipples” and “Gertie Kippells”, both born around 1886, apparently. In the family they were assumed to be from “Budapest” or “Vienna” but most of the people they associated with in London were from Galicia. Gertie married in 1914 and the synagogue records record her origin to be “Hungary”. Adolf/Joseph (later “King”) also said he was “Hungarian”. I am aware that the Austria-Hungary area was difficult to define!
I need expert advice to locate their origins and would welcome a quotation for research in Poland.
