My mother’s first cousin was Laura “Lucia” Wohl, daughter of Isaak “Izia” Wohl, my grandmother’s older brother, and Jetta Jutte “Yetka” Rothman Wohl.
Isaak was born 12 NOV 1880 in Brzezany, Ternopil, Ukraine (formerly Galicia, Austria), and he died on 8 MARCH 1919 .
Lucia, born in 1912 (exact day unknown) in Berezhany, Ternopil. Yetka, was born 28 JAN 1891 in Tarnawka, but most of her family lived in Stryj, Ternopil. Both Yetka and Lucia died in the Holocaust, but my grandmother never found out the dates, places, or details.
I do know a couple of things from a letter dated 28 May 1940 that survived the war : “I have received mail from Stryj. Lucia is in Lemberg and earns only what she needs whereas they withdrew Yetty’s pension. It distresses me that poor Lucia didn’t make it to leave to the USA. Now it is not possible.” (The letter writer also didn’t make it out).
Anything you could discover about their lives and deaths in Poland would be received with deep gratitude. These are family mysteries that my grandmother never knew the answers to, that my mother never found out the answers to, and that I am driven to discover. None of our family members could ever be memorialized because we never found out what happened to them. Perhaps you could be kind enough to help me out.
Thank you very, very much for your generosity.
