My great, great grandfather, Jacob Marks was a Polish immigrant, settling in Manchester with his wife Sarah (nee Ofchinsky). I am looking to discover more information about their life, and family, prior to moving to Manchester.
I have found their alien records in the Police Museum in Manchester. Jacob Marks has stated his home as being “Copchovah / Suwalki) and has two years of birth; 1868 (crossed out) and 1865. Similarly, Sarah is from “Copchovah, it doesn’t mention Suwalki though) and has two dates of birth; 1972 (crossed out) and 1866. We believe Sarah’s maiden name was Ofchinsky.
Jacob Marks was a tailor in Manchester, with a sewing factory at 15 Upper Camp Street, Manchester. They lived at 125 Elizabeth Street. In the 1911 census, Jacob and Sarah had a niece listed as living with them – Lotty Kaufman.
I was recently in touch with Archiwum Panstwowe W Suwalkach, who requested information about their parents and siblings in order to research – but I do not have this information, though interestingly it seems they may know their real Polish names:
“Kopciowo nalezalo W aktach tych mozemy prowadzic poszukiwania rodzin Marks i Owczynski. Prosimy o podanie imion rodzicow Jacoba Marksa i Sary Owczynskiej. Czy posiadali rodzenstwo?”
Interestingly they mention Kopciowo, which I know is in Suwalki and Jacob’s police records do mention Suwalki but it also says “Copchovah” not “Copchovoh” so I had made a calculated assumption that this therefore meant Kopcowa, which is not in Suwalki.
