I would LOVE help solving my family mystery. My great-grandparents were George Pindell and Nastka/Nesca Golanka, who arrived in the U.S. around 1910-1913. George and Nastka married in Wheeling, West Virginia in 1915. In 1927, Nastka was placed in an insane asylum and stayed there until her death, in 1968. Nastka’s mother, whose name I don’t know, was also placed in the same asylum; she died there in 1917. After Nastka was put in the asylum, George had an accident in the Wheeling coal mines that left him unable to work. He placed my grandmother and her sisters in a Catholic orphanage, where they were raised. My grandmother wouldn’t speak about her parents and told my mother they had died long before. My mother only found out Nastka had actually been alive upon her death in 1968.
I am trying to find out who Nastka and her family were. I know from her marriage certificate that she was born around 1896 in Galicia/Prussia. I don’t know where exactly, but many immigrants with the last name Golanka or Pindell come from Malopolska and Harbutowice. Nastka’s marriage certificate indicates her name is Nastka Golanka, but I have also seen her name as Nesca Golonka. She later took the American name Nancy, and upon marriage, was Nancy Pindell. Her death certificate lists her father as “Paul Galawer?” so it’s unclear how reliable that information is, while the birth certificate for her daughter lists Nastka as Nancy Gallagher.
George’s name has appeared as Vojtech in a census document. His last name has appeared as Pindell, Pindel, Pendl, and Pender. He was born in 1888. Is there anyone who could help? It is so sad that in only two generations, we have completely lost our roots.
Thank you SO much for any willingness to assist!
