My Jewish heritage on all sides of my family is Polish/Russian. They all emigrated to the UK. I have their UK addresses, UK professions, and UK family information but no other information beyond what follows. I would love to discover additional information about their lives pre-emigration. There appear to be no existing records of UK immigration from Europe, which could have potentially given me the Polish/Russian names of my family.
1. 3rd GREAT GRANDFATHER JOSEPH BARNETT/WIFE HANNAH LEAH: According to his 1849 UK Naturalization Certificate, 27 years earlier – that would make it around 1822 – Joseph emigrated to the United Kingdom. An old hand-written family tree that starts with him, has his birth family name as Bienstock with a question mark after it. I would like to discover the full Polish or Russian name of Joseph Barnett with places/addresses he may have lived in Poland/Russia and the names of his parents and any siblings.
2. GREAT GRANDFATHER STEIGLITZ OR STIEGLITZ (unknown first name) AND GREAT GRANDMOTHER MOLLY: Their son Samuel, per my father, was born in Krakow, Poland, his birth date 22 April 1881. xxx Steiglitz (or similar) was in the army and apparently was killed or died soon after Samuel’s birth. Not long after his death, his widow Molly (Polish name unknown, Jewish name Malka b. Mordechai), my great grandmother, emigrated to England with infant son Samuel. Apparently they were intending to emigrate to the USA but remained in the UK. She was born around 1863, possibly in Yedvabno, Lomza, which is where her brother Max Clarke was born around 1870 per his UK Naturalization Certificate, where their parents are named as Mathew and Zlato Clarke. My father believed their Polish name had been Klarkowicz or similar. I have a professional photo of Molly taken by a Warsaw photographer. Whether that means she lived in Warsaw, who knows! A mystery is that her daughter Gerty/Girty/Gertrude is shown on the UK 1901 and 1911 census as born in Russia in 1887. I would like to discover the full Polish or Russian names of Molly and her husband xxx Steiglitz or similar and his place of birth, parents and siblings. My dream would be to find his family today if he had siblings with children.
3. GREAT GRANDFATHER AARON LEVINSON: He first appears in the 1911 UK census at age 65, profession rag sorter, Poland Resident. In the census his wife is named Hannah. However, their three sons’ 1911 Naturalization Certificates name her as Saidy. The sons’ birthplace on the certificates is given as Ishbitz (Isbika) in the Province of Kalish (Kalisz), Russia, and Aaron and Saidy are stated as being subjects of Russia. Further, their certificates state they had at the time resided in the United Kingdom for five years, which would put their emigration at around 1903. In 1920 by deed poll their sons’ names were changed to Braham. No information as to whether Aaron and Saidy’s names were changed. Would love to discover something of their lives in Kalish?
4. 3rd GREAT GRANDFATHER ISRAEL NEWMARK (1851 Census spells it Iseral, possibly a misspelling?!) He appears in 1851 census shown age 63, born in Posen/Prussia (I know at times Posen was in Germany and Poland). He would have emigrated after 1846 as his youngest child, age 6, is shown in that 1851 census as having been born in Posen. I would like to discover his full German name, thought to be Neumark or Neumarkt, with places/addresses he may have lived in Poland/Russia and the names of his parents and any siblings.
